How to create a rock garden

The availability of space is a problem for everyone ... The art of the "garden among the rocks" is however so versatile and adaptable that it allows everyone to cultivate a certain amount of dwarf plants even to those who have little space, we want to give suggestions so that with little expense and little effort it is possible to have equally great satisfaction. The gardening work, in this case, will be more meticulous, meticulous, patient; but it will allow every plant to be followed closely from the beginning of spring as if it were a precious jewel. Indeed
many plants that we will propose really are.

THE "MINI - ROCK GARDEN"

It is a term used in Anglo-Saxon countries. The meaning is clear: "mini-rock garden", and you will often find it by reading specialized magazines.
You can start the construction at any time, but the spring period is recommended for the easy availability of suitable plants.
Who wants to make it really small (ie "mini"), look at and study the published figures. A little is enough of a place; but our experience tells us that ... the appetite comes with eating! As soon as you have about thirty plants, well placed among about twenty stones, you will want to enlarge, to make mountain paths and to introduce a greater variety of plants. It happens to everyone!

Location

With these perspectives, then choose a space that allows you in the future to enlarge the small rocky over the initial two square meters. The chosen place must not be in full sun for the whole day. The plants are better if they receive the sun's rays only in the morning or only in the afternoon, while remaining always in full light. The place must be dug well, herbicide as always carefully and the excavation (no more than 10-15 cm.) Filled with coarse gravel, mixed to the ground to ensure good drainage. The water that stagnates, in fact, is always very harmful to the roots. It is sufficient that the earth is moist and not too rich: for alpine plants an excessively fertile land would be harmful, as it would lead plants to develop more leaves than flowers. Better if the earth is calcareous and well sieved. For some species that need acid soil, it can be corrected with a third of peat or by taking acid soil somewhere else and placing it in the niche where the plant that does not like limestone will live. A medium composition, however, is good for all the easiest plants.

Materials

The choice of rocks is very important, there are many types on the market, and for all tastes. Look for rocks that are not smooth but old and weathered, possibly with many cracks, hollows and niches. The stones, once the garden is composed, must resemble a high mountain mound. It is not recommended to use more types of rock to do a job.

Rock arrangement

The shelf you will have prepared must have a sort of gravel path all around, on which to walk and always keep totally weeded to emphasize the rocky. Begin then to arrange, with great care, the larger stones, especially the bearing ones, on the front of the slope, to avoid landslides caused by spring frost. The "base carrier" is the main thing. Continue the work filling the earth and stopping it at the corners of the stones, so that the rain does not dilute it. And begin to place the first seedlings well, with the roots stretched out naturally, downwards but also inwards. It goes without saying that the plants will have already been purchased and kept for a few weeks in pots: this is the only way the vegetative growth will be safe. Don't forget that the plants should be kept constantly shaded and moderately watered for the first 5-6 days of planting. It is important to make one corner at a time, until completion, with good taste and studying the choice of plants: there must not be two equal (neither for color nor for form) nearby. The lower ones on the front and the higher ones on the back. For this first plant, 25 to 30 varieties will suffice.
They must be chosen in order to have a continuous flowering from March to September.
