Grass lawn

If we want the lawn in our garden to grow thick and lush, we must take great care of it. For lovers of outdoor life, however, few tricks are needed to obtain a turf worthy of the envy of the neighbors.

Types of lawn

Based on the use, there are three basic types of lawn: for playing fields, productive or forage and decorative or garden. These lawns differ from each other mainly because of the choice of grass species to sow, but the techniques of sowing and maintenance to be used are more or less the same. The playing field must be fertilized more than the others because it is stressed by trampling during the racing season, while in the forage field it is possible to allow the growth of some weeds that must be eliminated in the decorative lawn.

First of all we plan the location of the pedestrian and driveways for access to our house, useful above all in the most rainy periods when pedestrians and cars would leave unsightly furrows in the lawn, and delimit them with cords. Making sure we always work on dry soil, the fundamental thing before sowing a lawn is to completely remove the most superficial layer of the soil, which often consists of construction debris and excavated earth. Any excessive slopes must be leveled and if the ground has water puddles it is advisable to drain them. Later we have to bring in new fertile agricultural land for a thickness of at least twenty five centimeters. At this point weeding is necessary to eradicate the stones and the roots of weeds and to give permeability to the soil that must be worked for a long time with a fork and if it is too compact it must be added with coarse sand, while if it is too loose it must be added to peat . After these operations, let us arm ourselves with patience because for three months the soil must be left exposed to atmospheric agents, eliminating fish hooks and always being careful not to ruin the piles already laid. Then we roll, clean with a soft broom, lifting the crushed blades of grass, and finally water it with fine rain. After 15 days, cut to 4 cm and trim the edges with the crescent trimmer. Then we fill the joints between sods with sandy soil.Grass lawn: Lawn maintenance

Irrigation of the lawn is mandatory in the period of maximum growth, that is from spring to autumn, and on the hottest days of summer it must be performed every evening after sunset. On the market there are automatic sprinklers suitable for every need: the oscillating ones are more suitable for rectangular soils, while the rotating ones are preferable for circular soils. We must not exceed watering and in any case we try to use very fine jet sprinklers.
Weeds must be removed continuously, manually if they are sporadic, always eliminating their roots, or with selective herbicides fifteen days after spreading fertilizer to reinvigorate the species that we do not want to damage. The herbicide should never be used before six have passed months from the growth of the lawn because it could make the young plants decay.
Even shaving is done from spring to autumn, never with a wet lawn. Mowing the lawn allows to maintain the intense green color and to make the grass thicker and more resistant against parasitic attacks, weeds and mosses, but it should not be done too close to the ground because on the contrary it would weaken the lawn.
At the beginning of autumn the lawn must be aerated with a fork at a depth of 10 cm, cleaned, raked and carefully checked to avoid parasitic or cryptogamic diseases. We also eliminate earthworms, ants and moles with the appropriate baits on the market.
We level out any irregularities that have appeared with the settlement of the soil, spreading a light layer of soil.
In January it is necessary to collect the fallen leaves from the plants before they rot and in April it is advisable to spread a good fertilizer on damp soil but with dry grass, performing two crossed passages for greater uniformity. If the fertilizer is in powder form, it is best distributed by mixing it with dry sand. The liquid fertilizer is spread instead with a watering can with shower.
With this care we are sure that the neighbor's grass will never be greener than ours!
