Nemanatus is an exotic plant loved by flower growers. With proper care, it grows without problems on the windowsill.

Often grown as an ampelous plant in hanging pots or baskets. During the flowering period, it pleases the eye with bright inflorescences against the background of emerald shoots.

It is believed that the presence of a plant in the house attracts incredible luck and extraordinary financial success to its owners. More details about the flower are described in this article.

Botanical description and history of origin

Nematantus belongs to the Gesneriaceae family. It is found mainly in the tropical forests of South America. It is represented by shrubs and semi-shrubs, epiphytic and semi-epiphytic lianas. The plant has been known since 1846.

Various signs and superstitions are associated with nematanus. Poles for a specific type of inflorescences called it a humpbacked flower. The Germans associate it with:

  • romance;
  • flirting;
  • kisses.

In the CIS countries, they began to actively grow it recently.

The stems of young plants are straight, over time they begin to bend and hang under their own weight. It blooms with waxy flowers, predominantly tubular. The size and density of the inflorescences depends on the specific species. Flowers:

  • red;
  • pink;
  • yellow;
  • orange.

The leaves are colored in different shades of green, have an oval or ovoid shape.

Another name for nematanus is hypocyrt. Previously, they were considered different plants, but now they are classified as one species. The first name was given by a German scientist, and it came from the Greek words "nema" (thread) and "tanus" (flower).

The second name was given by the botanist Marcius. It also comes from Greek words, and is translated as "curved". This is due to the appearance of some varieties. Now both names are relevant, but hypocyrt is considered a slightly outdated option.

Main types and varieties with photos

In nature, there are several types of nematanus, from simple evergreen shrubs to epiphytic vines. They differ in appearance. Then you can read their description and look at the photo.

Hypocyrta Naked

The birthplace of epiphyte is Brazil... Liana adapts and develops successfully in other cultures. Popular with home gardeners. Under indoor conditions, the stem grows up to 25 cm.

It is a semi-ampelous plant with small emerald leaves. They do not fall off and do not change color during the entire period of development. It blooms with bright orange flowers that have a pronounced swelling to the bottom.

Other common types of indoor plants

Coin-leaved

Liana, prefers to grow and develop on other trees and shrubs. Stems and leaves are light green, with a fleecy coating. The flowers are deep red in color, at the base of the pharynx have a limb with a black edging. A unique feature of this species is foliage shedding along the entire length of the stem after flowering.

Gregarius

A miniature plant, the second name is goldfish due to the specific shape and color of flowers. Leaves are glossy, rich emerald color.

Fritsch

A bush with bright pink flowers, it grows up to 60 cm. The leaves are large, up to 7.5 cm, with a reddish tint below.

Vetstein

Ampel plant with long curly stems. In an adult liana, they reach 90 cm. The dark green leaves are oval, small, glossy. Flowers are rich orange with a touch of yellow. They reach 2.5 cm in length.

Riverside

Liana winding in any direction. The leaves are large, up to 10 cm. The flower is lemon-colored, with reddish blotches. There are no more than three buds in one inflorescence.

Cultivation and reproduction

Nematanus is not difficult to grow at home. But it is desirable to create conditions as close as possible to the natural growing environment. Caring for an established plant will not take much time.

When and where is it better to plant?

It is better to start planting in the spring. During this period, a long daylight hours, the plant receives enough sunlight, it easily takes root. When propagating nematanus by cuttings, planting is allowed in the summer months.

The flower is grown mainly in pots on the windowsill. But if the climate in the region is close to tropical, you can plant nematanus outdoors in open ground.

How to prepare the ground?

Nematanus is an epiphytic plant, the root system is poorly developed. The plant needs a loose soil with high air permeability. It is recommended to use a low and wide container for planting.

You can buy the substrate in the store or prepare it yourself:

  • From ready-made mixtures, soil for violets is suitable.
  • For self-cooking, you need to mix two parts of peat and leafy soil, add one part of sand and humus. Lay out 2-3 cm of expanded clay, perlite or vermiculite at the bottom of the pot. You can enrich the soil with charcoal or coconut fiber.

Breeding methods

There are two options for growing nematanus. The first is planting seeds in the ground. The second method involves breeding by cuttings.

Seeds

This is an easy method that does not require floriculture skills. The seeds are taken from a home plant when it has bloomed. The material is contained in the seed pods. You can buy ready-made seeds at the store.

But this method has drawbacks. The seeds are very small, similar to the dust. Care must be taken not to spill the material.

The seeds do not need to be soaked.

Before planting, it is better to pour the seeds onto a half-bent sheet of paper. A temporary container is used for breeding young seedlings. Cups, balcony boxes, old pots will do. They must be planted in the following sequence:

  1. Moisten the soil in a prepared container.
  2. Carefully sprinkle the material, no need to sprinkle it with earth.
  3. Spray the area with a spray bottle.
  4. Cover the pot with glass, plastic wrap or a clear plastic lid.
  5. When the first shoots appeared, the lid is slightly shifted.
  6. Watering is carried out by the method of bottom irrigation through the pallet.
  7. When the young have two leaves, they are dived and planted in permanent pots.

Before sowing, you need to inspect the material - there should be no wet or rotten seeds. In most cases, nematanus germinates well. But the first flowering should be expected a year after planting.

Cuttings

For the vegetative method, cuttings left after pruning an adult plant are used. The advantages of cuttings include the rapid germination of young shoots. It is necessary to select cuttings 8-10 cm long.

Disadvantages of the method - sometimes the cuttings do not take root, they start to rot. Often the reason is the use of too young seedlings.

How vegetation is done:

  1. Cut off the apical or stem cutting without flowers and buds.
  2. The cut must necessarily go under the knot.
  3. Remove the bottom two pairs of leaves.
  4. Disinfect the cut (Epin or Kornevin preparations are used according to the instructions).
  5. Plant in a prepared container.
  6. Cover the plant with a cut plastic bottle, or place it in a greenhouse. The temperature should be between 22-24 ° C.
  7. After 2-3 weeks, full-fledged roots are formed in the seedlings. You can transplant them into permanent pots.

Features of growing in the open field

If the climate is close to tropical, you can grow the hypocyrt outdoors in the open field.

  1. It is recommended to choose a shaded area.
  2. It is necessary to plant seedlings in late May or early June, when the probability of frost is completely excluded.
  3. You need a nutritious and loose soil, if necessary, I enrich it with peat, humus, sand, charcoal.
  4. For the winter, the plant is wrapped up, or transplanted into pots and brought into the room.

Leaving the first time after planting

  • Hypocyrta loves sunlight, but it needs to be alternated with shading. The best places in the apartment are window sills on the south-east or south-west side. You can place the flower on the south side, but in the summer additional shading is needed, otherwise there is a risk of burning the leaves.
  • Comfortable temperature is 20-25 ° С in summer. In winter, a decrease of 5 degrees or more is necessary. The main thing is that there are no drafts in the room.
  • The plant needs regular watering. Determine the moisture deficit by the dry topsoil. Distilled water at room temperature is used. Bottom watering through the sump is practiced. Rolled leaves also indicate that the hypocyrte needs watering.

    If for some reason the plant has been without watering for a long time, you need to place the pot in a container with water. But it should not flow into the pot through the top. The soil will fill the moisture deficit through the drainage holes.

  • In nature, nematanus grows in high humidity conditions. At home, it is necessary to regularly spray the bush with a spray bottle, or put a pallet with wet pebbles next to it.
  • Top dressing is carried out from March to October, about once every 20 days. You can use universal formulations according to the instructions. During the growing season, it is recommended to apply a nitrogen-containing fertilizer. When flowers appear, nitrogen is no longer needed, but the need for fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus increases. They are brought in after evening watering.
  • From November to mid-March, the flower needs rest. Ideally, move the pot to a cool but bright room. If the room temperature is below 13 ° C, watering is not required. It is impossible to feed hypocyrt in winter.
  • Young nematanuses grow rapidly, their root system is intensively developing. For the first 4 years, it needs to be transplanted every year. Then it is enough to carry out the procedure every 2-3 years as the root system grows. Periodically you need to inspect the pot - if the roots are visible from the drainage holes, it is time to transplant the plant into a larger pot.

The first flowers should be expected a year after planting. If the hypocyrte is planted by cuttings, it can bloom in the same year. Flowering lasts from mid-spring to autumn.

What if the plant does not take root?

If the landing was done according to all the rules, the hypocyrta feels good and is actively developing. But sometimes the plant does not want to take root. It looks weakened, does not grow. Often the problem lies in improper care.

Reasons for the unimportant state of nematanus:

  • The tips of the leaves dry - high temperature and increased dryness of the air in the room.
  • Light brown spots appeared on the leaves - too cold water for irrigation.
  • The leaves turn brown and fall - the result of water getting on them during irrigation.
  • The plant stretches up - lack of sun, it is necessary to move it to a brighter room or use a phytolamp.
  • Flowers, buds and leaves fall - called wet feet syndrome. The reason is low temperature, excessive watering, drafts.

A common problem is the lack of flowering, although the plant looks healthy. There may be several reasons, so you need to solve it comprehensively.

Sometimes pests attack the hypocyrtu:

  1. Aphids and mealy worms... White bloom on the leaves is a sign.
  2. Spider mites they suck the juice from the leaves and stem, which leads to the wilting of the plant.

To combat insects, Fitoverm, Aktofit, Aktara preparations are used according to the instructions.

Nematanus is a relatively unpretentious plant... Bright flowers decorate the room and cheer up, create the atmosphere of the real tropics. With proper care, the hypocyrt blooms every year throughout the summer.
